How To Cook Cabbage

Cabbage is a great vegetable to cook with, as it is incredibly versatile and can be used in a variety of dishes. It is also quite affordable and has a mild flavor, making it a great addition to many meals. Here’s how to cook cabbage:

Step 1: Prepare the Cabbage

Before you begin cooking with cabbage, it is important to make sure it is properly prepared. Start by cutting the cabbage into wedges or slices, depending on how you plan to cook it. Make sure to remove any tough outer leaves and rinse the cabbage under cold water.

Step 2: Choose a Cooking Method

There are several different methods for cooking cabbage, depending on the flavor and texture you’re looking for. You can boil, steam, sauté, fry, or even bake cabbage.

Step 3: Boiling Cabbage

If you choose to boil cabbage, add the prepared cabbage to a pot of boiling water. Boil the cabbage for 8-10 minutes, or until it is tender. Be sure to not overcook the cabbage, as it can become mushy. Drain the cooked cabbage in a colander and season with salt and pepper, if desired.

Step 4: Steaming Cabbage

If you prefer to steam your cabbage, place the prepared cabbage in a steamer basket over boiling water. Cover the pot and steam for 10-12 minutes, or until the cabbage is tender. Once done, season with salt and pepper, if desired.

Step 5: Sautéing and Frying Cabbage

To sauté or fry cabbage, start by heating a few tablespoons of butter or oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Add the prepared cabbage and cook, stirring often, for 8-10 minutes, or until the cabbage is tender. Season with salt and pepper, if desired.

Step 6: Baking Cabbage

Baking cabbage is a great way to bring out its natural sweetness. Preheat your oven to 375°F. Place the prepared cabbage in a baking dish and season with salt, pepper, and any other desired seasonings. Cover the dish with foil and bake for 20 minutes. Uncover the dish and bake for an additional 10 minutes, or until the cabbage is tender.

Step 7: Serving

Once your cabbage is cooked, it is ready to be served. It is delicious as a side dish or can be added to recipes like stuffed cabbage rolls or cabbage soup. Enjoy!
