How To Cook With Leeks

All you need to know about: How To Cook With Leeks.

Preparing the Leeks

Before you can cook with leeks, it’s important to prepare them properly. Start by cutting off the top and bottom of the leek. Slice the leek in half lengthwise, then rinse it under cold running water. This will help remove any dirt or grit from between the layers. Cut the leek into thin slices and you’re ready to start cooking.

Sauteing Leeks

Sauteing is one of the quickest and easiest ways to cook with leeks. Start by heating a tablespoon of olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the leek slices and cook, stirring occasionally, until they are softened and lightly browned, about 5 minutes. Add a pinch of salt and pepper and adjust the seasoning to taste. Serve the sautéed leeks as a side dish or as a topping for salads, pasta, or other dishes.

Braising Leeks

Braising is a great way to bring out the sweet, mellow flavor of leeks. Start by heating a tablespoon of olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the leek slices and cook, stirring occasionally, until they are just beginning to soften, about 3 minutes. Add a cup of vegetable or chicken broth, a pinch of salt and pepper, and bring the mixture to a simmer. Reduce the heat to low, cover pan, and simmer for about 10 minutes, or until the leeks are tender. Serve the braised leeks as a side dish or a topping for salads, pasta, or other dishes.

Roasting Leeks

Roasting is a great way to caramelize the natural sugars in leeks and bring out their sweet flavor. Preheat the oven to 400°F. Cut the leeks into 1-inch slices and place them in a large bowl. Toss with a tablespoon of olive oil, a pinch of salt and pepper, and a sprinkle of your favorite herbs (such as thyme or oregano). Spread the leeks in a single layer on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Roast for 20-25 minutes, or until the leeks are golden brown and tender. Serve the roasted leeks as a side dish or as a topping for salads, pasta, or other dishes.
