How To Cook Walleye

All you need to know about: How To Cook Walleye.

Step 1: Preparing the Walleye

Before you start cooking, it is important to properly prepare the walleye. Start by rinsing the fish with cool water and patting it dry with a paper towel. If you plan on skinning the walleye, use a sharp knife to cut off the head and tail, then cut along the backbone and remove the skin. Once the fish is prepped, season it with a light sprinkle of salt and pepper.

Step 2: Choose the Cooking Method

You can cook walleye in a variety of ways, depending on your preference. Common methods include baking, grilling, frying, and poaching. For baking, preheat the oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit and place the walleye on a greased baking sheet. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes, or until the fish is cooked through. If grilling, preheat the grill to medium-high heat and lightly oil the grate. Place the walleye on the grill and cook for 5 to 7 minutes per side, or until the internal temperature reaches 145 degrees Fahrenheit. To fry, heat 2 inches of oil in a deep skillet over medium-high heat. Fry the walleye for 4 to 5 minutes, turning it once, until golden brown. To poach, bring 1 quart of chicken broth or white wine to a simmer in a large skillet. Add the walleye and simmer for 7 to 8 minutes, or until the fish is cooked through.

Step 3: Serve the Walleye

Once the walleye is cooked through, remove it from the heat and serve while still hot. To add extra flavor, serve with a side of lemon wedges and a dollop of tartar sauce. Enjoy!
