How To Cook Tamale

Tamales are a traditional Mexican dish that is perfect for special occasions or for feeding a large crowd. Tamales are usually made with masa, or corn-based dough, that is steamed in a corn husk or banana leaf. The filling can be anything from cheese, beans, and meats to vegetables and fruits. The following recipe is a basic tamale recipe that can be adapted to your own preferences.

Ingredients:

– 2 cups masa harina
– 2 cups warm chicken or vegetable broth
– 1/2 cup lard or vegetable shortening, melted
– 2 teaspoons baking powder
– 2 teaspoons salt
– Filling of your choice: cooked chicken, beef, pork, vegetables, cheese, beans, etc.

Instructions:

1. In a large bowl, mix together the masa harina, warm broth, lard, baking powder, and salt. Knead the dough until it is smooth and pliable.

2. Grease a large baking sheet with lard or vegetable shortening.

3. Divide the dough into 10-12 balls. Flatten each ball into a circle and place on the baking sheet.

4. Place 1-2 tablespoons of the filling of your choice in the center of each circle. Fold the dough over the filling and press the edges together to seal in the filling.

5. Place the tamales on a steamer rack in a large pot with a tight-fitting lid. Add enough water to the pot so that it does not touch the tamales.

6. Place the lid on the pot and bring the water to a boil. Reduce the heat to medium-low and steam for 45 minutes to 1 hour, until the tamales are cooked through and the dough is no longer sticky.

7. Serve the tamales warm with salsa, guacamole, or your favorite toppings. Enjoy!
