Step 1: Preparing the Pork Shoulder
Before you start cooking your pork shoulder, you’ll need to prepare it. Start by trimming off any excess fat from the outside of the pork. If the pork shoulder is bone-in, you can use a sharp knife to cut off the bone. Once the pork is trimmed, pat it dry with paper towels.
Step 2: Seasoning the Pork Shoulder
Once the pork is prepped and ready to go, it’s time to season it. To make a basic pork seasoning blend, mix together garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, and salt. Rub the seasoning blend all over the pork, making sure to get into all of the crevices and into the fat.
Step 3: Cooking the Pork Shoulder
Now it’s time to cook the pork shoulder. You can cook the pork in the oven, on the stovetop, or in the slow cooker.
If cooking in the oven, preheat to 375°F. Place the pork shoulder in a roasting pan and cover with a lid or aluminum foil. Roast for about an hour and a half, or until the internal temperature of the pork reads 140°F.
If cooking on the stovetop, place the pork shoulder in a large pot and cover with enough water or stock to just barely cover the pork. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for about 1 to 1 1/2 hours, or until the internal temperature of the pork reads 140°F.
If cooking in the slow cooker, place the pork shoulder in the slow cooker and cover with enough water or stock to just barely cover the pork. Cook on low for 8 to 10 hours, or until the internal temperature of the pork reads 140°F.
Step 4: Finishing the Pork Shoulder
Once the pork shoulder is cooked, you’ll need to finish it. This can be done by broiling the pork in the oven for a few minutes to crisp up the outside, or by placing the pork under the broiler for a few minutes.
When finished, remove the pork from the heat and let it rest for 10 minutes before serving. Enjoy!
