How To Cook Asparagus

Asparagus is a delicate vegetable that is perfect for quick cooking methods such as steaming, roasting, grilling and sautéing. It can be used in a variety of dishes, from salads to side dishes, soups to entrées. Here is a guide on how to cook asparagus.

1. Prepping the Asparagus

Before you start cooking, you need to prepare your asparagus. For starters, you want to remove the tough ends by gripping the asparagus stalk at both ends and bending it until it snaps. The end that snapped off will be the tough part and the other end will be the edible part. If your asparagus is thicker than ½ inch in diameter, you can peel the skin off the stalk.

2. Steaming Asparagus

Steaming asparagus is one of the quickest and healthiest ways to cook it. To do so, you need a steamer basket and a pot to fit it in. Fill the pot with about an inch of water, bring it to a boil and then place the steamer basket inside. Place the asparagus in the steamer basket, cover the pot and steam for 3-5 minutes, or until the asparagus is tender.

3. Roasting Asparagus

Roasting asparagus is an easy and flavorful way to cook it. To do so, preheat your oven to 425°F. Place the asparagus in a single layer on a baking sheet. Drizzle with olive oil, season with salt and pepper and toss to coat. Roast for 10-15 minutes, or until the asparagus is tender and lightly browned.

4. Grilling Asparagus

Grilling asparagus is a great way to impart smoky flavors. To do so, preheat your grill to medium-high heat. Place the asparagus on the grill and cook for 5-7 minutes, or until the asparagus is tender. Make sure to turn the asparagus occasionally to ensure even cooking.

5. Sautéing Asparagus

Sautéing asparagus is a great way to add flavor and texture. To do so, heat a skillet over medium-high heat. Add a tablespoon of butter or oil to the skillet. Once the butter is melted, add the asparagus and cook for 5-7 minutes, or until the asparagus is tender. Season with salt and pepper and serve.
