Ham How to Cook

Ham is a versatile cut of pork that can be cooked in a variety of ways. Whether you’re looking for a quick weeknight dinner or a festive holiday feast, ham is sure to be a crowd pleaser. Here are a few tips and tricks to help you prepare the perfect ham.

Choosing the Right Cut of Ham

When it comes to ham, there are a few different cuts to choose from. The most common type is a cured whole ham, which is available in both bone-in and boneless varieties. You can also buy pre-sliced ham, or a spiral cut ham which has been pre-sliced and arranged in a spiral shape.

Brining the Ham

Brining is a great way to add flavor and moisture to your ham. To make a basic brine, combine 1 cup of salt with 2 gallons of water in a large pot. Bring the mixture to a boil, stirring to make sure all the salt has dissolved. Let the mixture cool to room temperature, then soak your ham in it for 12-24 hours.

Baking the Ham

Preheat your oven to 325°F. Place your ham in a roasting pan, cut side down. Cover with a lid or aluminum foil and bake for 1-2 hours, or until the internal temperature of the ham reaches 140°F.

Finishing the Ham

When the ham is done baking, remove the foil or lid and brush the ham with your favorite glaze. Place the ham back in the oven and bake for an additional 15 to 20 minutes, or until the glaze is golden brown and bubbly. Let the ham cool before slicing and serving.
