I know many of us prefer white rice to brown rice simply because white rice tastes much better, but if I tell you brown rice can taste just as good as white rice if you had the best rice cooker for brown rice, would you change to the healthier alternative?
If you have been eating brown rice, you’ll know that practically any rice cooker can be used to cook brown rice. However, most of the time brown rice comes out a bit hard, crunchy or chewy compared to white rice, because brown rice has higher fiber content and each grain has the bran and hull intact.
Best Brown Rice Cooker
I used to dislike brown rice until I tasted brown rice from the Zojirushi NP-HBC10 rice cooker. This is the best rice cooker for brown rice because the rice simply tastes amazing. Each grain is perfectly cooked to a plump and moist grain, even those at the very bottom of the pot.
Brown Rice Tastes Amazing
At first glance this rice cooker looks just like any other computerized rice cooker, with a stainless steel body (but not a stainless steel pot) and a generous amount of settings in the menu. It also has induction heating, which I’m sure helps cook the rice more evenly, but isn’t proven to make brown rice any better.
It wasn’t even advertised for brown rice, although it does feature two brown rice settings. However, convinced by the numerous reviews praising the quality of brown rice from this rice cooker, I bought it for my old man who’s diagnosed with diabetes.
Takes Time to Cook Brown Rice
The two brown rice settings are one normal brown rice setting and one GABA brown rice setting. The GABA setting is said to release the nutritional value in brown rice, though by tasting the rice cooked using the different settings I couldn’t tell the difference; both tasted just as delicious.
The rice cooker takes a little more than an hour to cook brown rice in the normal brown rice setting, which is about twice as long as any other rice cooker! If that dismays you, think about the delicious brown rice that will result. I’m telling you that it’s worth it.
If even one hour is too long to wait, you may never want to use the GABA brown rice setting, which takes over 3 hours including two hours to soak the rice! All right, there’s actually a way around this. Just use the delay timer for cooking brown rice. Set the timer to start cooking three hours before your meal time.
This is one of the higher quality rice cookers from Zojirushi, and you can tell just by looking at the build and the quality of the parts. The lid can be removed for washing, which is one of the things I love best with Zojirushi rice cookers.
Compared to the other models from Zojirushi that I’ve had or tested, this comes at a much higher price than other fuzzy logic rice cooker models without the induction heating, and slightly pricier than those with induction heating but with a plastic finish.
Is it worth spending that much for a rice cooker? For the average rice eater, perhaps not. For someone looking for the best rice cooker for brown rice, this is the one to go for. Click here to view more detail.
